The Hating Game

“The perfect feel-good novel for summer.”

Summary

Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman hate each other. They have no problem displaying their feelings through a series of passive-aggressive maneuvers as they sit across from each other, executive assistants to co-CEOs of a publishing company. Lucy can’t understand Joshua’s joyless, uptight and meticulous approach to his job. Joshua can’t understand Lucy’s overly bright clothes, quirkiness, and attitude. Now up for the same promotion, their battle of wills has come to head and Lucy refuses to back down when their latest game could cost her her dream job. But when the tension between Lucy and Joshua reaches its boiling point, Lucy discovers that she maybe doesn’t hate Joshua. And maybe, he doesn’t hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game…

Review

I enjoyed this book so much! Normally I’m not an extreme fan of feel-good novels, but this is one of the best books I’ve read this year.

I think Sally Thorne’s writing style is the reason why I loved this book so much. She writes with a lot of humor which makes you read this book very quickly. She portrayed the two main characters so well that you came to love them, despite all the pranks the two played. The storyline is not that unique, but because Thorne added small and unique elements to the story, this story differs from ‘normal’ novels.

I thought that the story itself was a bit predictable at times. As you read on in this book, more and more pieces of the puzzle fall into place, confirming the things I already knew. On the other hand, this is also part of a feel-good. I also thought that the ending was written a bit too quickly for my liking – I would have loved if it was a bit longer. I’m secretly hoping for a sequel.

I finished this book very quickly (once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down either), which would make this a perfect book to read in summer.

Conclusion

A wonderful feel-good novel with just the right elements that make this book stand out from the others. The perfect balance between humor and love, which makes you fall in love with the characters yourself. The book does have a predictable ending, but on the other hand, this does add something to the story. The perfect feel-good novel for summer!
