A Deadly Education

“A book with a dark twist of Harry Potter”

Summary

El Higgins is a girl who, just like her schoolmates, has the powers to extract ‘mana’, a kind of energy, that you collect from living creatures and objects. This ‘mana’ is then used for magic spells. You can only leave school if you pass the graduation ceremony. There is a lot of mana needed for this ceremony. You aren’t safe – monsters are everywhere. Yet there are still people at the school who keep people safe, like Orion Lake, who beats the terrible monsters almost every day. Is there someone who El can still trust? Or does Orion have other intentions?

Review

{Disclaimer: This book was given to me by Luitingh-Sijthoff in exchange for an honest review. This has not had a positive or negative effect on my review.}

I want to start this review by thanking Luitingh-Sijthoff for giving me this book. At the beginning of the book, I found it very difficult to really get into the book, because you are thrown into the story, followed by a lot of information. After a while, you get used to this and read the book a little faster. Still, I felt the book was slow to read because I was not used to reading books without paragraphs and with very long sentences.

Naomi Novik has created a beautiful story that looks a bit like a dark version of Harry Potter – with the magic and the strange creatures. The story keeps getting more and more exciting and you can’t wait to read the ending. The end of the story seemed very closed until you read the very last sentence which was a huge cliffhanger – this means I have to read the second part.

Novik has created a very well-written story with a lot of magic and creatures. I am very curious about the next parts.

Conclusion

A beautifully written story with a lot of magic and creatures. I would definitely recommend this book if you like fantasy and Harry Potter. Thanks again Luitingh-Sijthoff!
