The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

‘This book felt like coming home. Simply stunning and so comforting.’

Summary

Meet Addie. Invisible Addie. Addie, the girl who made a deal with the devil to escape a life she never viewed as her own. Ever since she was little, Addie wanted to wander the world, the WHOLE world. But there wasn’t any time, and there weren’t any possibilities. Until that one night, when she prayed, desperately, for someone to save her. And then he appeared, maybe the night itself, wearing a perfect face. The stranger promises Addie everything she ever wanted and Addie eagerly agrees. He may take her soul once she’s seen everything. He may take it once she doesn’t want it anymore. That’s how Adeline – Addie – finds herself strotting through present-day New York, almost three hundred years later. And she indeed saw the world, and met so many interesting people, none of which she’d ever forget. But it doesn’t work that way the other way around. Once Addie is out of sight, she’s out of mind, making those three centuries pretty lonely. Only the stranger, her stranger, remembers her name. Unless…?

Review

Wow. It almost feels like a betrayal, coming across a book so good that your past favourite is already fearing for its intangable reputation. But really, I think I found my new favorite book in The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. The book, to me, absolutely felt like coming home. It felt like a warm embrace, comforting and consoling me in the best way possible.

Addie was such a relatable and lovable protagonist, which is kind of a rare thing to me. It was so unsettling to read and think: wow, yeah, that kind of sounds like me! In fact, now that I’m thinking about it, I felt quite strongly for every character, however minor. That really was a problem though, because I got hurt way too many times in this book! So let’s focus on some of the good stuff instead: the beauty of art, the complexity of human beings and the pros and cons of living forever are all key motifs in Addie’s story, beautifully executed.

And let’s talk about the story itself. Addie’s story was wholly unique to me and Schwab really took some interesting turns throughout the book, thus keeping the story going at a great pace. The possibilities of the concept were well explored, in my opinion. This was also the first book from V.E. Schwab that I read, so I didn’t really know what to expect. But I found that she writes beautifully, describing everyday life in such an enchanting and refreshing manner!

Conclusion

Let me just conclude by saying that I think everyone should read this book. I loved every second of it, and I think a lot of people will feel at home while reading about Addie. Honestly, I think all booklovers will find a piece of themselves in her. Let’s all make sure that she’s never to be forgotten again.
